By now, we’re sure many of you have either watched or at least heard about the Netflix series Adolescence. It’s sparked a lot of conversation, and quite a few people have been asking for our thoughts. As with anything that brings important topics into the spotlight, we’re all for it! Of course, everyone will have their own interpretations, and that’s what makes these discussions so valuable.
When chatting with one of our Directors, Hannah, about the series, she shared one episode that really stood out to her. It was the one where the Clinical Psychologist sat down with the young boy. People will take different things from that moment, but for Hannah, what resonated most was the raw emotion shown by the psychologist.
Hannah reflected on how the clinical world is often seen as a steadfast, all-knowing field - where professionals are expected to bring their A-game every day and always have the right answers. But the reality is, behind every title, they’re just humans, too, navigating a world filled with complex emotions, especially when working with vulnerable children.
For her, it was refreshing to see a ‘professional’ openly show that emotion. She could only imagine how difficult it would be for a psychologist to walk away from that little boy in a secure home, knowing he needed connection and reassurance - yet being unable to provide it for many reasons.
Moments like these remind us how important empathy is in every role, and how powerful it can be to simply acknowledge the emotional weight of working with young people who need support.
What were your thoughts on the series? We’d love to hear your take!
