Our Reflections: Keeping Children Entertained During the School Holidays

As the Easter school holidays draw to an end, the team took some time this month to reflect on a challenge many of us know all too well - keeping children entertained for an entire school break. Whether you’re a parent, carer, or someone who works closely with families, the juggle of school holidays can feel like a full-time job in itself.

This topic struck a personal chord with many of our team members, some of which have navigated the highs and lows of school breaks while balancing work, family life, and the ever-changing demands of a growing child. The pressure to find new outings or fresh activities can feel relentless, especially when you've already ticked off the local parks, leisure centres, and the well known nearby attractions.

And then there are those rainy days - when the weather doesn't cooperate and the options for entertainment shrink quickly. You can often be left weighing up the prospect of a wet and windy walk versus yet another round of indoor activities. During our reflections, we shared some of our favourite go-to pastimes for days like these - sharing those reliable and low pressure activities that don’t require extensive planning, but still deliver connection and creativity.

Baking was a favourite among some of our team, particularly for its perfect blend of fun and ease (bonus points if it ends with a warm tray of cookies to share!). Other within the team found success with classic arts and crafts, pulling out glue sticks, coloured paper, and the craft box for an afternoon of imaginative play. These quieter, at-home moments were often described as the most rewarding of all, allowing both children and adults to slow down, connect, and enjoy the simplicity of shared time together.

As we look ahead to the next half term already peeking over the horizon, the team also reflected on the value of planning. Whilst being spontaneous has its place, we all agreed that a loosely structured week can make a world of difference, both in terms of reducing stress and increasing enjoyment for all involved. Having a few key activities or outings scheduled (with some flexibility built in if needed) can help balance expectations, create an easier rhythm, and ease the pressure on adults trying to fill the days.

Whether it's a full-blown itinerary or just a short list of rainy-day options tucked in a drawer, a little planning can go a long way!

If you're heading into the next break wondering how you’ll keep your children engaged, you’re not alone. Many of us are in the same boat, learning to navigate the balance between fun, rest, and reality, and sometimes, the simplest moments such as a messy baking session or arts and crafts at the kitchen table, can often be the most meaningful.
