This month, the Therapeutic Blueprint team have been reflecting on the importance of navigating feelings - both our own and those of the children we care for. Emotions form the foundation of connection, communication, and understanding, especially in the early stages of life, yet helping young children to recognise, express, and regulate their feelings isn’t always easy - it takes time, patience, and attunement.
We wanted to share a fantastic resource from The Centre for Early Childhood’s Explainer, which explores the power of attuned conversations with babies and young children. This beautifully created piece dives into why early emotional communication is so crucial, and how everyday interactions, from shared eye contact to gentle tone, can help children begin to make sense of their inner world.
Their short film highlights how adults can talk to babies and young children about their emotions and feelings in simple, compassionate, and developmentally appropriate ways. By noticing emotions together (and naming them out loud!) - whether it’s joy, frustration, or sadness - adults help children build the language and confidence to understand and express themselves. This not only supports emotional regulation but also strengthens the child’s sense of safety, trust, and connection.
At Therapeutic Blueprint, we often reflect on how early attuned interactions lay the groundwork for healthy emotional development later in life. When children learn from an early age that their feelings are valid, understood, and accepted, they carry that sense of emotional security with them into later relationships and challenges.
We encourage all parents, carers, and professionals to take a moment to explore this valuable resource and reflect on how you can bring attuned and emotionally aware communication into your daily interactions.
Sometimes, it’s within the smallest conversations that the deepest understanding begins!
